Introduction to Motivational Interviewing for Occupational Therapy Practice

Occupational Therapy Australia (OTA)

About this session

An interactive 3-part online workshop introducing occupational therapists to motivational interviewing (MI) core elements and practical application. Participants learn MI skills including the spirit of MI, four tasks, OARS techniques, change talk, managing ambivalence, and how to integrate MI with occupational therapy approaches across various practice settings.

Program Overview

Motivational Interviewing is a way of talking with people about change to strengthen motivation and commitment. MI provides skills to support meaningful changes, particularly when change is difficult. It addresses ambivalence, relapsing conditions, and discord between client and worker. The workshop uses lectures, videos, demonstrations, group activities, and reflection to teach MI core elements and practical application.
