Hutch Masterclass. PI: Understanding Claims Made Policies
Underwriting Agencies Council (UAC)
About this session
Presenter: Ross Chambers, Head of Longtail An educational session for Brokers who place PI and want to revisit the foundations. During this one-hour webinar, we will be exploring how claims-made Professional Indemnity policies typically operate, where misunderstandings commonly arise, and why timing and notification require careful consideration. Learning Objectives Explain the difference between claims made and occurrence-based policies, and identify which policy year responds to a claim. Check a policy’s retroactive date and continuity of cover, and explain how gaps in cover or a change of insurer can affect a client’s protection. Write a clear professional services description, and explain why “if it’s not on the schedule, it’s not covered”. Compare inclusive and exclusive limits and excesses, and show a client what each means in dollars when defence costs apply. Assess common extensions (fidelity, vicarious liability, run-off) and common exclusions (bodily injury and property damage, directors and officers, fee disputes) so clients know what they are and are not buying. Prepare a stronger submission, using scope of works, project and client details, and a client CV, and relate the concepts to real claims across property management, accounting, graphic design and beauty.
